It sure hasn't felt much like January the last few days. Yesterday the reports were poor, other than the fact that it was a great January day. I think that the mud is just too much to overcome. The lake is very muddy, with as little as 6" of visibility. From the looks of the satellite picture there is a little better clarity on the reefs, but the rest of the western basin is a mess. Most people were fishing in the south passage and around Kelleys yesterday trying normal ice fishing techniques from their boat. Very few fish were caught.
Don't forget that the WBSA is having a party at Ray Sterk's house near Wakeman this coming Saturday. Details and directions are on the WBSA home page (www.wbsa.us). I'll be there and would like to meet more of you.
The Vermilion buoy has been pulled for the season. The most recent (7 pm, Sun. 1/29) report from the South Bass weather station has wind gusts up to 30 knots out of the SW and the wind chill is 37.8 F.

I really can’t figure this winter out. We started with an early cold freeze in December that produced some ice that lasted about 3 weeks, but wasn’t ever really fishable for ice anglers. Now we’re right back into the 50’s and today was much nicer than a lot of March and April days. We finally caught a break from the clouds. For the first time in weeks we got a great satellite picture of the lake:

You can see the remnants of ice around the islands and a little more up in Canada . Other than that the lake is primarily open water now. There is thick mud from Maumee Bay to Camp Perry along the shoreline, and then it turns and heads towards North Bass. It is one of the few times that you will see very dirty water on the reef complex with clearer water around it (a lot of times the reefs are clear and there is dirtier water around them, probably due to current effects and possibly zebra mussel filtering on the reefs). As usual there is a strip of very clear water nearshore from Ruggles Reef to Beaver Park (this always seems to be the case when we get a south wind). Anyway, it’s nice to see the Lake again after weeks of clouds.
I’m getting second hand reports of fishing from Catawba to Green Island . Most anglers are ice fishing from their boats by jigging with spoons or basically perch fishing for walleye with spreaders. The results have been sporadic, but fish are being caught. I am currently between boats trying to make a trade, or I would be headed out myself. I keep thinking that the cold is on the way, but the weather has just stayed mild.
I talked to Marc Hudson today, our president of the WBSA. He wanted to make sure that everyone knows the club is having their second annual February party at club member Ray Sterk’s building on February 4. The day usually starts with skeet shooting and socializing in the afternoon, followed by an incredible pot luck wild game dinner in the evening. Last year it was a great time and was very well attended. I plan on being there and would like to invite all of the Denied readers that want to come out and meet other die hard Lake Erie anglers. If you have any interest in the club this would be a great opportunity to check it out. Even if you aren’t interested in the club you are all still invited and should come out for an enjoyable day. It would be a good chance for me to meet more of you in person. The club still has a lot of Dean’s fishing equipment and will be raffling it off throughout the evening. Ray lives near Wakeman (south of Vermilion). There will be more details regarding the party on the club’s home page coming up very soon.

I want to wish everyone a happy new year. I hope that you all had a great holiday season.
Believe it or not I do have fishing information to report. All of this warm rainy weather has opened most of the lake up. Mazurik and Cranberry Creek have both had some activity. It sounds like the water is clear, but nobody has been able to catch any fish. This information is coming from the Walleye Central "fishing reports" page. You really need to be careful this time of year as there could be floating chunks of ice anywhere. It won't take much cold weather to start freezing things back up again.
The Vermilion buoy has been pulled for the year. The most recent (9 am, Mon. 1/2) report from the South Bass weather station has wind gusts up to 20 knots out of the E-NE and the wind chill is 25.0 F.
